Tukkivan valtimotaudin klassiset riskitekijät ovat tupakointi, diabetes, kohonnut verenpaine ja dyslipidemia. Yhdysvaltalaisessa tutkimuksessa henkilöillä, joilla ABI oli alle 0.9, 95 %:lla oli ainakin yksi edellä mainituista riskitekijöistä ja yli 70 %:lla kaksi «Selvin E, Erlinger TP. Toisessa tutkimuksessa «Kennedy M, Solomon C, Manolio TA ym. Risk factors for declining ankle-brachial index in men and women 65 years or older: the Cardiovascular Health Study. Arch Intern Med 2005;165:1896-902 »2 tutkittiin 2 200 henkilöä, joilla oli ABI 0.9–1.4 uudelleen 6 vuoden kuluttua niiden tekijöiden löytämiseksi, jotka olivat yhteydessä ABI:n huononemiseen. 9.5 %:lla ABI huononi ja tekijät, jotka olivat yhteydessä ABI:n laskuun olivat ikä, tupakointi, kohonnut verenpaine, diabetes ja korkea LDL-kolesteroli.
